About this project
The extension is conceived as a quiet, contemporary intervention that strengthens the architectural narrative of the listed barn without competing with it. The core idea is to create a single storey addition that feels deliberately secondary to the historic structure light, recessive, and clearly legible as a modern layer while still delivering a highly functional, beautifully day‑lit living space.
The existing barn remains the dominant mass. The extension sits low and linear, aligning with the barn’s eaves and ridge hierarchy so the historic roofscape continues to read uninterrupted. Materials are chosen to echo the agricultural vernacular clay tiles, timber, and muted zinc yet applied with crisp detailing to signal a contemporary approach. Junctions are intentionally clean: shadow gaps, recessed flashings, and minimal trims ensure the new work never mimics the old.
A key driver is bringing controlled natural light into the barn. The extension uses full‑height glazing and carefully positioned openings to frame views of the surrounding landscape. The glazing is not simply decorative; it creates a transitional zone between inside and outside, allowing the barn’s heavy masonry to be balanced by a lighter, more open architectural language.
Internally, the extension acts as a spatial release moving from the barn’s enclosed, characterful volumes into a brighter, more fluid environment. The ceiling line is kept simple and uninterrupted, enhancing the sense of calm and openness.
Overall, the concept is about respectful contrast: a modern, single storey addition that enhances the barn’s usability and comfort while celebrating its heritage. The extension is not an imitation but a complementary evolution an architectural dialogue between past and present, solidity and lightness, enclosure and openness.
